Saul J. Karpen, M.D., Ph.D. FAASLD is a pediatric hepatologist, Professor of Pediatrics, Raymond F. Schinazi Distinguished Biomedical Chair, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Emory University School Medicine/Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The overarching aim of Dr. Karpen's research is to understand the root causes and adaptive mechanisms for cholestasis, with the goal of discovering and implementing rational molecular targets, focusing upon nuclear receptors, bile acids and transporters. His overall goals are to develop integrative programs to improve clinical care, enhance basic hepatology research, and provide applied clinical research, including the discovery of new therapeutic agents—all focused upon the unique and pressing needs of infants and children with liver disease.

On a national and international basis, he is co-chair of the Liver Forum’s International Pediatric Cholestatic Disease Working Group and an active participant in two NIDDK-supported consortia for liver disease: ChiLDReN and NASH CRN. His service to the organization includes serving as Chair of the Basic Research Committee, Pediatric Member of the Scientific Program Committee (SPC), and Chair of the Cholestatic and Autoimmune Liver Diseases and Pediatric Liver Disorders SIGSs. Dr. Karpen has also contributed to AASLD’s mission by serving two separate terms as a member of the Nominating Committee.
