Dr. David E. Kaplan is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He serves as Director of Hepatology at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Veterans Administration Medical Center. Dr. Kaplan completed his Internship and Residency at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed Gastroenterology Fellowship and Master’s in Translational Research training at the University of Pennsylvania.

From 2002-2007, first as a T32 fellow, then AASLD/Schering Advanced Hepatology Awardee, and later KL2 recipient, Dr. Kaplan performed translational research related to the immunopathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C in the laboratory of Dr. Kyong-Mi Chang. As an independent investigator, he developed an NIH and VA-funded translational research laboratory focusing on immunological defects related to advanced liver disease and the immunopathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma. He also collaborates with multiple VA collaborators using the VOCAL cohort, a large VA database facilitating epidemiological studies related to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. He also directs a regional Multidisciplinary Liver Cancer Tumor Board and Liver Cancer Clinic at the CMCVAMC. He currently serves as vice-chairman of the AASLD Foundation Research Awards Committee.

Dr. Kaplan is the primary author or co-author of over 70 original publications, reviews, editorials or book chapters in the fields of chronic liver disease. Recent honors include the VA Diffusion of Excellence Gold Star Fellowship.
